World Sexual Health Month

The American Sexual Health Association (ASHA) defines sexual health as the ability to embrace and enjoy sexuality throughout our lives, adding that it is an important part of our physical and emotional health. They provide information on other topics including sexual pleasure and its benefits, sex after 50, sexual health in the military and ten questions to ask your healthcare provider about sexual health. You can even get a “quickie” from ASHA through their podcast, cleverly titled The Quickie, which is a series looking at current issues in sexual health in a short (less than five minute) format. They will debut a new episode each week during September. You can stream their episode on World Sexual Health Month here.

The World Association for Sexual Health has deemed September 4 as World Sexual Health Day and this year’s theme was Sexuality Education for all: a bridge to sexual health. The theme focused on comprehensive sexuality education, explained as a process that is based on a curriculum to teach and learn about the cognitive, emotional, physical and social aspects of sexuality. Its objective is to prepare children and young people with knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will empower them to realize their health, well-being and dignity; develop respectful social and sexual relationships; consider how our choices affect our own well-being and that of others; and understand what our rights are throughout our lives and make sure they are protected.
