Liletta IUD Approved for 5 Year Use
In recent contraceptive news, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the extension of use for Liletta Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) from 3 years to 5 years. This is exciting news because now Liletta will be usable for the same amount of time as Mirena, another IUD lasting for 5 years. To read more about this development, click here. The Liletta 52mg device was first introduced in February of 2015 by Medicines360 and Allergan as another hormonal IUD option to assist users in the prevention of pregnancy through the release of the hormone levonorgestrel. When interviewed, the CEO of Medicines360 had this to say:
“A large and diverse population of women already use Liletta as a safe, long-acting and reversible contraceptive option. This approval means that Liletta is now indicated for up to 5 years of use. To date, no hormonal IUD has been studied across more women in a single Phase 3 clinical trial conducted in the U.S. In partnership with Allergan, we remain steadfast in our mission to help women access available birth control methods that are appropriate for them, regardless of their income.”
IUDs are an effective birth control method for preventing pregnancy, are easy to use, and last a long time. For more information on IUDs and other birth control methods, check out SexFYI.org, Bedsider.org, or ask you healthcare provider.
