The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the first drug meant to help prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS in at-risk individuals.

Truvada, a combination medication that was approved by the FDA in 2004 to help control HIV in infected individuals, has been found to significantly reduce the risk of acquiring HIV. Uninfected individuals must take the pill daily and continue to use other methods of safer sex in combination with Truvada.
